Plath’s The Bell Jar follows Esther Greenwood as she works as a guest editor for a magazine in New York, after her internship when she returns home, through her relationship with her college sweetheart Buddy, her descent into madness, and her eventual return to sanity. It so clearly brings to light how mental illness impacts people in their daily lives. I originally picked up this book for a class assignment, but have repeatedly come back to it because of the dark humor and biting commentary about what it’s like to deal with mental illness as a woman. It has quickly become my favorite book and my top recommendation to all.

Hi Anna,
Thank you for this recommendation. It’s been some years since I read this book. Maybe it’s time to return!
I am glad you are highlighting books that showcase women and mental health! The more we talk about it, the easier it is to acknowledge that we all struggle.
So glad you all have launched this website. The banner image is wonderful!
